So said Singaporean Ambassador to Manila Kok Li Peng as she expressed optimism that President Rodrigo Duterte will keep his promise on making the country safe and prosperous.

Kok said that while Duterte will face many hardships during his six-year-term as president, he will undoubtedly make good on what he promised to the Filipino people.

“I think your president has many challenges to face and to deal with. But what’s striking is that he’s got a very comprehensive agenda and his ensemble is very experienced and very capable. He’s going to do it,” she told the Manila Times. “I think it’s the Philippines’ time. Every country has a time. This is it.”

At the same time, the ambassador said Duterte has at least a headstart in improving the economy owing to its strong growth and development in the past two years.

“Your economic growth is amazing and it has steadied for the last couple of years. So anything that boosts that further is going to draw a lot of attention,” she said.

Kok added that Singapore is very much willing to be the country’s partner for change; saying that businessmen from her country are eying the Philippines for possible investments in retail, infrastructure and the transportation sectors.

“In our bilateral relations, I think this is an exciting time in terms of the Philippine economy,” she said. “If we open up and improve connectivity, I think people-to-people links will be strengthened, it will boost tourism and businesses will come. “Once you connect two points, many things can happen.”
