Amid the Senate inquiry on the spate of drug-related killings, President Rodrigo Duterte blasted his critics who have been accusing him of human rights abuses in the government’s ongoing war against drugs.

In his speech at Camp Capinpin in Rizal province, the president reminded his critics — especially the Commission on Human Rights — that they should be working to uphold the lives of ordinary law-abiding citizens instead of crying foul over killed criminals.

“We’re supposed to protect the integrity of the Republic and the safety of the citizens,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying. “Itong mga critics, pag humaharap sa ganito, lumalaki bunganga pati ulo [These critics, when they face you, their mouths become bigger and they become so full of themselves]. They talk nonsense.”

“You work your ass to death, staking your life there, and then this will happen?” he added; referring to the uniformed men of the country.

Duterte then dared his detractors to choose whether to fight for the lives of the law-abiding population or those of criminals.

“Itong mga human rights, mamili ka [These human rights advocates, choose]. Is it the comfort or safety of the population or the lives of criminals?”

While scoring his critics, the president also reiterated his support for the country’s law enforcers provided they also follow the law in performing their duties.

“These people just want to complain. I take full responsibility. Do your work… If you think there is a crime, shabu and if you have to shoot them, then shoot them. Just tell the truth,” he said.
