President Rodrigo Duterte lashes out to the New Peoples Army (NPA) after a CAFGU man was ambushed by the armed group just a few days after he declared unilateral ceasefire during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“Ilang taon na? You cannot even occupy a barangay?” Duterte asked during his speech in a wake of a man killed by an ambush conducted by the NPA.
“I was a student I was there. I was really a spectator of how it evolved (communist rebellion). So alam ko ngayon it’s fundamentally wrong for the Filipino to kill a citizen and for the rebels to wage a war that is wala (nothing),” added Duterte.

Duterte said that he felt betrayed by the group, after bending over backwards just ‎to accommodate the CPP-NPA starting from his days as Davao City Mayor, where he gave them access to his city to his first few days in the Presidency, where he appointed three leftist member in his Cabinet – Rafael Mariano, Judy Taguiwalo, and Liza Maza.
“Even before I became President, magkakausap tayo. Ako ‘yung pumupunta dito. Kinukuha ko ‘yung mga bihag na sundalo. Mga pulis. So, but in return, you had my—access to the city of Davao. Walang gumagalaw sa inyo. Kung may mamatay nga sa inyo, ako pa ang nagpapagador‎,” said Duterte.
‎”Ang reply ng komunista is parang defensive position. Hindi naman stand down. That is not a good response. Alam naman nila ang sitwasyon. Hindi na nila kailangan mag-aral pa. I was expecting that they would also reciprocate my imploring for peace with the ceasefire, on their side,” said Duterte.
