In a press conference held at Balara Elementary School in Quezon City on May 16, 2017, the second highest officer of the land spoke about the importance of seeing the people as stakeholders of schools in their respective communities.
“[Sa] tingin ko kasi, iyong Brigada Eskwela, dapat hikayatin iyong lahat ng nagpa-participate kasi isa itong community activity na hindi mae-enjoy nang magkakasama pero parang pinapaalala na lahat tayo may stake sa paaralan sa ating community,” she said.
[As I see it, there is a need to remind those who participate in Brigada Eskwela that more than enjoying everyone’s presence in this community activity, they should know that they are doing these things as stakeholders of the school in our community.]
According to Robredo, she and her family members have always participated in the same event even during the time when she has not entered politics yet, and when her husband was still serving as a mayor in Naga City.
“Mula noon, mayor pa [ang] asawa ko at wala pa ako sa pulitika, hanggang naging congresswoman ako, hanggang ngayon, talagang I make it a point na sumali sa Brigada Eskwela.”
[Even before, when my husband was still a mayor and when I was not into politics yet, and when I became a congresswoman, until now, I always make it a point to join Brigada Eskwela.]
The vice president noted, however, that she has observed a decline in the number of people participating in the Brigada Eskwela this year. She also mentioned that her staff chose Balara Elementary School to be their beneficiary when they learned that over 800 students fall under the “severely wasted” category in the school.
