MANILA, Philippines  –  With his client again in the spotlight due to her acquittal of serious illegal detention charges, the counsel of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles denied his client had been the brains behind the operation which drained the government of billions of pesos.

In an interview with ANC, Atty. Bruce Rivera admitted that while his client may have done something wrong, she was not the most guilty.

“Napoles maybe perhaps did something wrong but she was not the most guilty. Somebody else made more money. Somebody else took advantage and these are public officials. We never elected Napoles but we elected these public officials,” he said.

Rivera, a staunch advocate of President Rodrigo Duterte, did not identify who these officials were.

“I never said that Napoles is innocent. Everybody knows that. I’m not saying that she’s not guilty. I’m simply saying that she’s not the most guilty. Clearly, that is the case. Perhaps, if she has suffered in jail, that’s the bed she made. But at the end of the day, somebody, a public official we elected took advantage and became rich in the process,” he stressed.

Rivera represents Napoles in her serious illegal detention case which was recently thrown out by the Court of Appeals.

In overturning the earlier decision of the Makati Regional Court, the CA 12th Division said there was reasonable doubt to belie the claim of pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy’s claim he had been abducted by Napoles.

Accused of stealing billions, Napoles is still facing a string of plunder cases in connection with her role in the scam.
