Former Department of Environment and National Resources (DENR) secretary Gina Lopez pointed out why Senator Alan Peter Cayetano voted against her on Wednesday.

According to the former environment secretary, Cayetano was influenced by a big mining corporation to reject her appointment in favor of the Zamoras of Nickel Asia, the largest nickel company in the Philippines.

She said that the Zamoras are one of the campaign contributors of Senator Cayetano during the election.

“He clearly voted against me, it was very evident. He’s funded by, I mean the Zamoras funded his political campaign, so go figure,” Lopez said in an interview on News To Go on Thursday.

She also said that Cayetano is obviously favored the interest of the miners.

“His thinking is clearly skewed towards the mining industry” She added.

Two days ago, Cayetano told the former DENR Secretary that she need to check the ‘legal standards’ and he really wanted to confirm her, but he want to make sure that the DENR will not become ‘arbitrary’.

During the hearings of the commission on appointment, Cayetano always grilled Gina Lopez about her qualifications as DENR Secretary.

Cayetano is the closest ally of Rodrigo Duterte, but netizens were shocked that he rejected the woman who appointed by his President.

Some reports circulating on the internet that Cayetano rejected Gina because of her alleged connection with the Eric Guiterrez, owner of the controversial SR Metals, Inc.
