In a speech of President Rodrigo Duterte in North Cotabato, Friday, February 3, he announced the lifting of the government's unilateral ceasefire with the communist rebels.

During the presidential campaign, Duterte declared that he would like to have a peace with the communist. However, the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army spokesman Jorge "Ka Oris" Madlos announced the lifting of their own unilateral ceasefire two days ago.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the CPP-NPA had exchanged accusations of ceasefire violations over the past several days.

"It's almost 50 years in the making. Ang ibig sabihin, gusto ninyo another 50 years? Wala nang katapusan? Eh, kung walang katapusan, sige. But let it not be said that I did not try," Duterte said.

"So I guess peace with the communists cannot be realized during our generation. Maybe years from now. So, ayaw ko magpatayan," he added.

"Pero kung ganoon lang naman na ang sundalo ko pinapatay pati sa ubang [ibang] lugar, resume tayo. Anytime," Duterte said.

"Sorry. I would like to express my sadness. We cannot have a peaceful generation," he added.

“There will always be a fight. I’m here for six years. Siguro kung malasin, less than. But to me, mahirapan na tayo. About the only time, the golden opportunity—kasi galing ako sa left—would be under my administration. Otherwise, wala na... Hindi naman nila pansinin iyang presidente,” he said.
