On Friday, February 24, 2017, Senator Leila De Lima officially presented herself for arrest at the Senate at 8:00 in the morning. The senator was then escorted to the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court and later transferred to detention facility in Camp Crame.
According to the trusted news source, Rappler, the senator had the following to say during an interview before her arrest:
"Sasama na po ako sa kanila voluntarily. Nananalig po ako sa Diyos na malalampasan ko po ito."
"It's my honor to be jailed for the principles I am fighting for."
According to GMA NEWS ONLINE, De Lima was recorded saying the following in a statement that she gave before Friday morning's events.
“I have long prepared myself to be the first political prisoner under this regime, because the criminal charges and prosecution are nothing less than a politically motivated act by the Duterte regime to clamp down on any vocal opposition against its support for a policy of EJK in dealing with suspected criminals."
The statement mentioned above appears to have gotten the attention of former senator Juan Ponce Enrile who, as the public may well be aware of, was one of the senators who got involved in the pork barrel scam in 2014.
Enrile reportedly said the following after hearing about De Lima's statement about the being the first "political prisoner" of the Duterte administration.
“Anong political prisoner? There's no such thing as political prisoner."
"You are a prisoner, period."
The former senator also added the following:
“Kami na binilanggo nila na wala namang kamuwang-muwang, ano kami? Sila santo, santa, kami demonyo?”
“Bawat isa sa atin, kung may paratang, sagutin. Wala nang reklamo. Pabayaan na lang sa husgado litisin ang problema. Kung wala kang kasalanan, bakit ka matatakot?”
Readers may also remember that Enrile was one of three senators (the other two were Ramon Revilla, Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada) who were subjected to an investigation in 2014 in relation to the pork barrel scam. The investigation was headed by no less than Senator Leila De Lima who was justice secretary at that time.
