Well-known Anti-Duterte activist and artist Jim Paredes was lambasted by actress Vivian Velez when the latter posted in her Facebook details of the Light A Fire Movement – a violent movement during and against the Marcos regime – whom Ester Jimenez, mother of Jim Paredes, was a part of.
"Meron hugot kasi... Jim keeps harping about the EJK or the people who died from drugs when his own mother was very much part of the LIGHT A FIRE MOVEMENT along w/ Steve Psinakis," Velez said.
Along with Jimenez, Steve Psinakis is also infamous for his anti-Marcos sentiments and movements. He is a Greek-born American who led the San Francisco council of the Ninoy Aquino Movement (NAM), unsurprisingly so since he has close ties with the late senator.
In her post, Velez also revealed that Ester Jimenez was pardoned for her participation in Light A Fire Movement by Cory Aquino when the latter took her seat as president.
Light A Fire Movement was a movement led by prominent people who decided that violence is the solution against "abuses" during Martial Law. They executed several bombings that shook Metro Manila in the early 1980s. They trained mostly in the United States, with targets here in the Philippines.
"They were responsible for bombing different establishments here including the old Philippine Plaza where innocent people died. This was where Nonoy Zuñiga lost his leg," Velez added.
"So how can he [Paredes] talk about killing the innocent when his own mother has blood on her hands!" Velez reacted in her post.
According to blog Kahimyang, the Light A Fire Movement was responsible for several bombings in the country during the Marcos regime.
One of their targets was Rustan's mall in Makati in September 12, 1980 which injured 70 people and killed an American tourist. On the night of October 4, 1980, more bombings happened throughout the country with locations in the Philippine Plaza, Century Park Sheraton, and Manila Peninsula hotels.
Another bombing on October 19, 1980 occurred when Doris Nuval Baffrey, a Filipina married to an American, detonated an explosive at the PICC while President Marcos was giving a speech at an international conference of the American Society of Travel Agents.
Doris Nuval Baffrey and 15 other people were arrested in connection to bombing. Marcos issued more arrest orders for some 30 persons allegedly indirectly tied to the bombing which included Ninoy Aquino and eight others living in the US, among them Psinakis.
The Philippines’ core operatives of the Light A Fire Movement were arrested during their meeting in Quezon City. Among them were businessmen Eduardo Olaguer, AIM professor Gaston Ortigas and Ester Jimenez.
The Light A Fire Movement group was convicted and sentenced to die by electric chair in 1984 but the sentence was never carried out because by the time the EDSA People Power broke out in 1986 and the Marcos regime came to an end and replaced by Cory Aquino, the Supreme Court nullified their death sentences.
