Marine Lt. Col. Ferdinand Marcelino, who is facing a drug case, voluntarily surrendered on Tuesday afternoon before the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Arevalo said Marcelino was accompanied by his sister and counsel. After a medical checkup, taking of mugshots and fingerprinting, he would be detained at the AFP Custodial Center, pending a petition for military custody to be filed by his lawyer.
Marcelino’s counsel Public Attorney’s Office chief Persida Rueda-Acosta said Marcelino informed him that he will surrender as he feels safer with the AFP. She cited that Marcelino has many enemies and that he was just being framed.
Marcelino, a former top anti-narco agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), was arrested in a drug bust in Manila in January last year. After several months in detention, he was released in June for insufficiency of evidence.
But in September, the Department of Justice charged him again fpr drug-related cases, yesterday a Manila court issued a warrant for his arrest.
The DOJ cleared Marcelino and Yan for lack of evidence last June since they said they were only working undercover for the PDEA. The ruling, however, was later reversed.
