A warship from Russia’s Pacific Fleet docked in Manila on Tuesday morning in time for a maritime exercise with the Philippine Navy.

According to a report Russian Navy vessels Admiral Tributs, a large anti-submarine ship, and Boris Butoma, a large sea tanker, docked at Manila South Harbor. 


The marines on board the Admiral Tributs are expected to show off their weapons and tactics on Thursday,

President Rodrigo Duterte has been expressing his desire to forge stronger ties with Russia as part of his administration’s pivot to an independent foreign policy.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana earlier said that Russia has offered to sell a submarine along with drones to the Philippines to boost the military’s modernization program.

The Department of Defense is looking at the acquisition of drones and sniper rifles from Russia.
Last December, Lorenzana met with Alexander Fomin, director of the Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation of the Russian Federation, in Moscow to explore possible military cooperation with Russia.
