A day before he took his own life by falling from a building inside Camp Crame, De Villa had repeatedly apologized to his family and friends. According to investigator PO3 Joaquin Rafael Florendo, De Villa was suffering low morale and depression over what happened.
“We think is he was suffering from low morale because of the case against him,” Florendo told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
De Villa’s lawyer Maritoni Renee Resurreccion said her client was depressed over the negative publicity the incident was casting over him and the PNP.
Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta also revealed that the National Police Commission (Napolcom) had recommended summary dismissal proceedings against De Villa.
Dela Riarte’s family earlier accused De Villa and fellow HPG member PO2 Jonjie Manon-og of murder after Dela Riarte was shot four times inside their patrol car despite being handcuffed behind his back.
In their defense, the officers claimed Dela Riarte was hostile and attempted to grab one of their guns inside the vehicle.
“We know he’s really troubled because of the negative publicity that he feels is affecting the reputation of the PNP and his family,’’ she said. “I’m convinced he was sorry that he performed his lawful duty and as a consequence someone died.”
Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta also revealed that the National Police Commission (Napolcom) had recommended summary dismissal proceedings against De Villa.
“They are recommended for summary dismissal proceedings,” she said. “We feel very sorry for him. We want the respondents be given due process alive in our judicial process.”
