MANILA, Philippines – Amid President Rodrigo Duterte’s scathing speech against Sen. Leila De Lima for allegedly having an affair with her driver with purported links to the illegal drug trade, PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa vowed to conduct an investigation should Digong order it.

“To satisfy you, I will conduct an investigation,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.

However, Dela Rosa said he preferred the probe would take place after they face the Senate inquiry on extrajudicial killings.

“Sa ngayon, hindi kami nakikialam baka mamaya gawing personal issue against us eh haharap pa naman kami sa Senado. Hindi kami nakikialam dyan,” he said.

[For now, we won’t meddle because it might be taken as a personal issue against us, we still have to face each other at the Senate. We won’t delve into that.]

At the same time, Dela Rosa said they will definitely conduct any investigation as part of their duty. He also said he believes that Duterte’s information is reliable.

“Maraming source si President,” he said. “Gagawin namin ang trabaho namin dahil trabaho namin yan eh.”

[The President has many sources. We will do it because it’s our job.]

As for the prospect of meeting De Lima face-to-face at the Senate hearing, Dela Rosa said he would rather focus on the task at hand—which is to explain the spate of drug-related killings.

“Affect me? No, naka-focus kami sa issue. ‘Yung side issues, iba ‘yan. Doon kami naka-focus sa subject,” he said.

[We are focused on the issue. Those side issues, those are different. We are focused on the subject.]
