“Based on the report of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, it (Butig town) has been cleared of the Maute and that clearing and fixing of the damage inflicted on the municipality is now ongoing before allowing the return of residents who evacuated,” Brig. Gen. Padilla said.
But before fleeing, the Maute fighters left a parting message to the military and President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to GMA News Online, the threatening message was left written on a chalkboard.
“Humanda kayong mga sondaro/popogotan namen kayo ng mga olo,” read the threat against the military.
[Beware soldiers. We will behead you.]
The bandits’ message to the President read: TAGOT/Homanda ka Duterte popotan/namen ikaw nang olo.” (Beware Duterte. We will behead you.]
At least 61 bandits have been killed and several others were wounded after the military offensives against the ISIS-inspired Maute Group started on November 26. No fatalities were reported on the government side, but 21 soldiers were wounded. The clashes displaced at least 2,000 residents who fled to safer locations.
