On Sunday, a pastoral letter was read as,homily in Catholic churches’ masses across the country.
The letter mainly cited ‘seven basic teachings’ which are rooted,in the people’s “being human, being Filipino, and being Christian”.
“An additional cause of concern is the reign of,terror in many places of the poor. Many are killed not because of drugs. Those who kill them are not,brought to account. An even greater cause of concern is the indifference of many to this,kind of wrong,” the letter read; adding that “change must be guided by truth and justice”.
But Alvarez said the bishops themselves,are sinners and the Catholic Church “has no moral ascendancy to judge what is right and wrong.”
“They are simply a bunch of Shameless,Hypocrites!” he added in a statement to Inquirer.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, for his part, suggested,that the Catholic church should put their effort to better use,and contribute more to the ‘reign of peace’.
“The officials of the (CBCP) are,apparently out of touch with the sentiments of the faithful who overwhelmingly support the,changes in the Philippines,” said Abella.
In the letter, the CBCP acknowledged that,illegal drugs need to be stopped, but said the solution does not lie in the killing of suspected,drug users and pushers.
The Church also vowed to,continue to ‘speak against evils’ even as it promised to help drug users heal and start new life, as,well as in strengthening families.
