President Duterte has been known to be very strict and iron-fisted so it’s rare for netizens (and people, in general) to see him emotional. Last year, when he visited the tombs of his parents upon winning the Presidential elections, he poured his heart out crying

This February 17, the President was again seen crying, this time, at the joint wake of the soldiers who were killed in an operation at Barangay Tawantawan, Calinan District, Davao City.

They were pursuing members of the NPA or the New People’s Army. The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. According to Definitely Filipino, the soldiers died when a landmine set up by the NPA in the vicinity they were in exploded

The photo above was taken at the Naval Station Felix Apolinario in Panacan, Davao City. Duterte was particularly viewing the corpse of slain soldier Michael Yadao

The President also visited the corpse of Private Virnel Damandon.

Duterte spoke with the soldier’s family and gave them envelopes of what is presumably financial assistance.

The soldiers he visited were part of the third infantry battalion.
They died at the noontime of February 17, according to the Civil Military Operations (CMO) officer of the Joint Task Force Haribon (JTF Haribon), Major Ezra Balagtey.

Balagtey also recounted that the NPAs previously harassed a military detachment at another village that morning before burning a pineapple harvesting facility owned by Del Monte in Tawantawan

Unfortunately, landmines were set up the NPAs along the soldiers’ escape route, resulting in the death of Yadao and Damondon. There were also seventeen soldiers who got injured in the encounter, and one rebel who died.

Below is the footage which showed the president visiting the joint wake of the fallen soldiers:
