A total of 10 persons were killed while many others were injured in an explosion which took place at a night market in Davao City.
In an article written by CNN Philippines, it was disclosed that police and emergency personnel rushed to a crowded night market area in Davao City after a blast ripped through Roxas Street, late Friday evening, September 2. Palace Spokesman Ernie Abella told CNN Philippines that at least 14 persons were killed while some 67 people were injured.
As of posting, the Davao City Police Office still has not given any statement or details on the blast. Davao Police Spokeswoman Catherine dela Rey, however, assured that the EOD (explosive and ordnance division) teams were already in the area looking for pieces of evidence.
Witnesses, on the other hand, said they heard one loud bang before 11 p.m. followed by smoke. They disclosed that the blast came from a massage area in the middle of the aforementioned street.
Duterte in Davao
Officials have already confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte was in Davao City on Friday night.
Assurance was given that the president was unharmed and secured in a police station.
Meanwhile, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte – the president’s son – asked the public to go home and for bars to close.
“Let us pray for the victims of this unfortunate incident, especially for those who died. Let us pray for those who are being treated in different hospitals and pray for their quick recovery. There are at least 10 people who perished because of the incident and a number were reported wounded. Rest assured the authorities are on top of this incident. Right now, we cannot yet give definite answer to as to who is behind this as we are also trying to determine what really exploded,” the vice mayor urged.
Moreover, the Davao City official said it’s a “sad day for Davao and for the Philippines.”
