Amid the ongoing Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Laos, the government released pictures showing 10 Chinese ships loitering in the vicinity of Scarborough Shoal.<br />

According to Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, the ships consisted of four Chinese Coast Guard vessels, four barges and two others. He said the presence of the ships could be a prelude to an attempt to form an artificial island in Scarborough Shoal.<br />
<br />
“Actually, there are  10 ships, four Coast Guard (vessels), four barges and two other manned vessels,” he told the Philippine Star. “What is suspicious is they have drums, things that appear to be containers. “We suspect that they’re testing the ground if their technology can reclaim underwater.”<br />
<br />
Lorenzana added that a new island means the Chinese will just be a few miles away from Zambales.<br />

“It is very worrisome. That area is ours. Once they seize an island, we can no longer recover it,” he said. “If they start reclamation and build structures, it can pose a risk to our security because it’s just 30 miles away from Masinloc town in Zambales.”</blockquote>

For its part, China’s Foreign Ministry denied their country was out to build new island in Scarborough Shoal.<br />

“I can tell you that there has not been any change to the Huangyan Island situation. China has also not taken new actions,” spokesperson Hua Chunying said.</blockquote>

Hua also blasted the Philippines’ report as building up hype against China.<br />

“Given this situation, some people are hyping the situation by spreading that kind of information. I think it is worth everyone being vigilant of this kind of intent,” she said.</blockquote>

The Chinese Embassy also confirmed the presence of the ships in Scarborough Shoal but said they are there for “law enforcement patrols”.</div>

The Japan Coast Guard released a four-minute video of numerous Chinese government ships and fishing boats advancing into the sea around the Senkaku islands. Around 200 to 300 Chinese fishing boats, accompanied by several Chinese coast guard ships, were spotted just outside of Japanese territorial waters from Aug. 5-9.<br />

In an apparent move to draw international attention to China flexing its maritime muscles in the disputed Sea, Japan Coast Guard has released a four-minute video showing numerous Chinese vessels from earlier this month nearly intruding the Senkaku Islands.<br />

Since August 5, some 200 to 300 Chinese fishing boats accompanied by 28 Chinese coast guard were spotted in areas just outside Japanese territorial waters around the Senkakus.<br />
The Senkakus group of Island and its area around it are controlled by Japan but claimed by China.<br />
The video footage shows what the Japan Coast Guard says are its patrol vessels moving into warn the Chinese coast guard ships and fishing vessels to leave Japanese waters.<br />

In the last part of the video, patrol ship Aguni equipped with a 20-mm cannon and a helicopter landing pad, approaches a Chinese coast guard ship and a fishing boat.<br />

The Aguni send a warning on its electronic message board urging the Chinese ships to leave the waters immediately saying “Your ship has intruded into the territorial waters of our country,” the message says, according to the captions.</blockquote>

“Non-innocent passage in the Japanese waters is not allowed. Get out of this area immediately,” the Aguni warned, according to the Japan Coast Guard.</blockquote>
Of 18 Chinese government ships spotted around the Senkakus, seven were equipped with what looked like machine guns, a Japan Coast Guard press statement said.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Actions by the Chinese side like this, which will escalate the situation, is not tolerable,” it said.</blockquote>
China has usually operated just three government ships from various agencies in the contiguous zone around the Senkakus at any one time, but this number the jumped far higher, the Japan Coast Guard said in the statement released Monday.</div>
